Local SEO is not the same as regular SEO. When someone in Redding searches "plumber near me" or "best Mexican food Redding CA," Google shows them a specific set of results — the local pack, the map, the businesses it believes are most relevant and trustworthy for that location. Getting into that pack is local SEO.
It's also not complicated once you understand what Google is actually looking for. This guide covers everything you need — no jargon, no upsells, just what works for Redding businesses in 2026.
1. Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important asset for local rankings. It controls what shows up when someone searches your business name, and it's what populates the map results.
What a complete GBP needs:
- Business name that matches your legal name (no keyword stuffing)
- Correct primary category — this is the most important field. "Plumber" beats "Contractor."
- Verified physical address or accurate service area for mobile businesses
- Local phone number (not a 1-800 number)
- Business hours — and keep them updated
- Photos — real ones, not stock images
- Regular posts (at least once a week)
- A keyword-rich business description that reads naturally
If you serve a geographic area without a fixed location (like a mobile mechanic or a landscaper), set your service area to include Redding, Anderson, Shasta Lake, and the surrounding Shasta County communities where you actually work.
2. On-Page Local Signals
Your website needs to tell Google — explicitly — where you operate and what you do. Google reads your pages the same way a first-time visitor does: it starts at the top and looks for signals.
- Title tag — include your primary keyword and your city. "Mobile RV Repair Redding CA | Boss Bros RV" is better than "Boss Bros RV."
- H1 tag — your main visible headline. It should contain your service and city.
- First paragraph — mention your location naturally in the first 100 words.
- Meta description — the text under your link in search results. Write it for humans and include your location and service.
- LocalBusiness schema — structured data in your page code that explicitly tells Google your name, address, phone, hours, and service area. Most local sites don't have this. It's a significant advantage.
- Footer NAP — your name, address, and phone number in the footer of every page, consistently formatted.
3. Citations and Directories
Citations are online mentions of your business name, address, and phone number. They build trust with Google by confirming your business exists and is located where you say it is.
Key directories for Redding businesses:
- Yelp
- Better Business Bureau
- Bing Places
- Apple Maps
- Facebook Business Page
- Nextdoor
- Angi (formerly Angie's List) for trades
- Industry-specific directories (Houzz for contractors, Healthgrades for medical, etc.)
The most important rule: your NAP must be identical everywhere. "123 Main St" and "123 Main Street" are inconsistent to Google's crawlers and hurt your local ranking. Pick one format and use it everywhere.
4. Reviews
Google reviews are a significant local ranking factor. More importantly, they convert searchers into customers. A business with 50 reviews at 4.8 stars will outrank and out-convert one with 10 reviews at 5.0 stars almost every time.
What actually works for getting reviews in Redding:
- Ask at the moment of peak satisfaction — right after you've finished a job, before the customer leaves
- Send a follow-up text with a direct link to your Google review page
- Respond to every review, positive or negative — it shows you're engaged
- Never offer incentives for reviews — it violates Google's policy and can get your listing suspended
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Keyword stuffing your business name on GBP (e.g., "John's Plumbing | Redding CA | Best Plumber | Emergency Plumber") — Google will suspend you
- Inconsistent NAP across directories — pick one format and stick with it
- Ignoring the website — GBP alone is not enough. You need a website that supports your ranking
- No mobile optimization — the majority of local searches in Redding happen on phones
- Buying reviews — it doesn't work, gets detected, and can kill your listing
Local SEO in Redding is an opportunity. The market is not oversaturated. For most service businesses in Shasta County, doing the basics well can be enough to hit page one within weeks, not months.
