Most Google searches now happen on a phone. In markets like Redding — where a large portion of the customer base for trades, services, and restaurants is people searching quickly from their phones — that share is almost certainly higher. Your customers are not sitting at a desktop when they decide they need a plumber or a place to eat.
Here's why that matters for your website — and for your Google ranking.
Google's Mobile-First Index
Since 2019, Google has used mobile-first indexing. That means when Google crawls your website to decide how to rank it, it looks at the mobile version first. Not the desktop version. If your site works great on a computer but poorly on a phone, Google sees the phone version — and ranks accordingly.
This means that a website built for desktop with a responsive "afterthought" mobile experience will rank lower than a site built mobile-first from the ground up. It's not a technicality. It directly impacts whether your Redding business shows up on page one.
What "Mobile-First" Actually Means
Mobile-first web design means designing for the smallest screen first, then scaling up — not the other way around. When you design desktop-first and then try to make it work on mobile, you're always compromising. When you design mobile-first, the phone experience is native, and the desktop version is an enhancement.
In practice, mobile-first means:
- Text is readable without zooming — minimum 16px font size on body text
- Buttons are large enough to tap with a thumb — at least 44x44px touch targets
- The phone number is a tap-to-call link, prominent at the top of every page
- Forms are simple and easy to complete on a small screen
- Images are compressed for fast loading on mobile data connections
- Navigation is clean and accessible without a mouse
- No content requires horizontal scrolling
Common Mobile Failures I See in Redding
These are the most common mobile problems I find when auditing Redding business websites:
- Hero images that load at full desktop resolution on mobile — a 4MB image that looks sharp on a desktop takes 15 seconds on a phone network and tanks PageSpeed scores
- Contact forms with tiny input fields — fingers are not pixel-precise. Form fields that are difficult to tap on mobile lose you inquiries.
- Phone numbers that aren't links — on mobile, a phone number should be a tappable call link. If someone has to copy it and open the dialer manually, most won't.
- Pop-ups that block the entire mobile screen — Google penalizes intrusive interstitials on mobile, and visitors hate them
- Navigation menus that break on small screens — desktop nav layouts often become unusable at mobile widths without proper responsive design
The Redding Context
Think about the typical customer journey for a Redding service business. A homeowner's AC breaks. They're standing in their hot living room. They grab their phone. They search "AC repair Redding CA." They look at the first three results. They tap the one with the best reviews and a phone number that's easy to find.
If your site loads in 8 seconds, has tiny text, and buries the phone number at the bottom — they're calling your competitor.
Boss Bros RV was built mobile-first. His new customers found him exactly this way — phone in hand, searching for mobile RV repair. The site was fast, the phone number was at the top, the service area was clear. They called.
Every site I build is mobile-first by default. It's not an add-on. It's the foundation.
If you want to check how your current site performs on mobile, run it through Google PageSpeed Insights. If the mobile score is under 80, you have a problem worth fixing. My website auditing service will tell you exactly what needs to change.
